That 40 bucks is canadian, and probably also covers payroll taxes and benefits. The employee will see a fraction of it.

In my area, over $65 an hour is a little steep, but 80 is not uncommon.

But I could swap your UIM in less than three hours, if that.

Contracting out your work will cost big bucks.
The dealer has to make a profit to stay in business.
A typical Canadian tradesman makes $25 - $30 / hr. Benefits will add another 40% normally including vacation.
Most companies mark up their products 100% to cover overhead and profit. Walmart is probably the exception but certainly not Car Dealers.

So, unless you make more money than that, it makes sense to take time off work and do it yourself. A paid vacation so to speak.

As a professional, I make a bit more money than a tradesman but still prefer to do my own work because I like doing it, saving money is secondary and it'* a good stress release.

Bill, Average heavy duty mechanic is making 40 dollars an hour at most heavy duty shops, including ours. Benifits optional, and are deducted off gross monthly.
Remember, this isnt Automotive though, its heavy duty mechanics. Even being in parts, most experienced guys make more than experienced guys in Automotives. We sell alot of Eaton trannies that MSRP for 6000 and a 3000 core charge.
US and Canadian dollar is getting closer to each other.
However we are taxed more.
7% point of sale, and my dad for instance is taxed 49% of his GROSS Yearly income.
In other words, pretty high.

Don't get me started on taxes..

Alberta knows nothing about taxes

Actually incremental income over about $70 K a year is taxed at 49%. The average total income tax works out to about 30%.

But then to buy anything we have to pay 14.5% tax, so 49% is pretty close.
