Default 87-91 interest level?

Besides a select few of us who love our 87-91 body styles, it seems there is less interest here, and it seems the supply of parts is drying up also. Less stuff on Ebay, NONE at the junkyard currently.

I plan to try and get another year out of my 2, however if nothing speaks up for this years tax refund, we just MIGHT jump off into 92-99 territory. Probably not an SSEi, I used to want one, but the slightly simpler aspect of an NA appeals to me.

I would love to hear some thoughts from the 87-91 owners who replaced them with newer ones

I had a 89 LE with 212,000....it was a nice car for the year.

94 ssei - great car, it was $500...worth $500, had a lot of issues

93 ssei - best car ever, no issues to speak of other than a KR issue, but performance related issues can be expected with high miles and age I guess.

SSEi'* are higher maintanence hands down. more stuff to break, however not by much compared to n/a...even the worst optioned out SE'* still have climate control, power windows, cruise, often a power drivers seat, power locks, abs, remote trunk button etc.

Maybe in your region. In my smallish town though, the yard owner is not really a go getter about getting new stock, and he tends not to hang on to them too long. I try to visit about every 4 weeks and glean what I find useful, but lately its been Regals and older minivans for engine stuff, he hasnt had a single 87-91 for months.

If I lived near a bigger city or different region, I am sure this would be different
He had 3 of the later models, all SE with minimal trim, good stuff already picked over, I joked with him once about getting on his waiting list so I could have first dibs. All he had left last week was one, 205k, white (you knew that though) nothing good left on it except maybe the seats and even they were kinda trashed.

I do see plenty still on the road here, maybe people are just hanging on to them because they simply wont die

Even AutoZone is carrying less lately, they arent stocking motor/trans mounts anymore, and when I changed my timing chain and sensor, it had to be ordered in

Nothing that you shouldn't expect for a car that age.
If you decide to go for the newer vehicle, you might make the big jump and head up to a Series2. You know the mod bug will bite eventually, and the S2 is alot easier to work with.

As you can tell from my sig, I have the '90 SSE and the '95 SSEi. I wish I could keep the '90 but I can't afford to keep both on the road. So at the end of November (when the plates expire on the '90) I'm driving it to the scrapyard (with tears rolling down my face) and they'll give me CDN$100 for it. It'* a real shame because there are a lot of new parts on it. To put it simply, the '90 has been the most reliable car in my 30+years of driving. I could probably get over 100,000 more kilometres on that engine and tranny.
