GM says they don't go back that far..Where and who might have the cod for the ign key

As far as I know only the GM dealerships can cut keys from the VIN. Try a couple other dealerships to see if you get the same response.

These guys advertise they will cut to a VIN, but I have no idea if they can go back to 1986:

Probably would be easier in the long run to remove the old one and install a new one with keys.

Here is another thought, can a locksmith cut a key for it?

Only the dealer has access to look up a VIN and determine a key code. As to whether or not a locksmith can inspect the pin configuration in a lock cylinder and determine how to cut the key, I don't know.

Most tumbler lock systems require a key to be able to take them apart. No key, no disassemble.

But to answer the original question, can a locksmith cut a new key just by looking at the pins? Yes.

Here'* the scoop on keys, If you have an original key we will copy it ALL day long. if we have to pull code from the VIN from GM database, we need proper documention and proof of ownership.

Anything older than 1990 no code exists that we can acquire ( even a mid '90s code is iffy on getting). The code was on the original invoice from the selling dealership of that vehicle back in 1986. I seriously doubt that invoice is still around anywhere. Older than 90s we have to even look up parts on microfish (sp?)

simple solution, take apart steering wheel, get $15 cylinder with keys from napa, make extra spare and keep it safe.

If I remember right there was a key code with the broadcast sheet on the 70'* and 80'* cars usually in the glove Box. I remember having lock smiths come out to the shop and find the code and make keys. As far as rekeying the car I'm sure the issue isn't the ign lock cylinder but the doors and trunk and even some glove boxes were keyed and that isn't a fun job.

Never mind I went back and seen you only said ign key. Yeah it'* a 20 min job and 10.00 part to replace the ign cylinder if you have a steering wheel puller and lock ring compressor.
