3800 with a distributor
'85 only, still driving the oil pump on the old (lousy) oil pump design. Technically, it isn't a 3800 either. Designation didn't change until the last vestiges of the engine evolving from a V8 was removed with the offset piston rod setup.
They were supposed to be pretty fragile. Really tainted the new, "big" transverse front drives. GM had delayed these bodies debut a year trying to get them right, IIRC. The Cadillac 4.1 V8, the Buick 3.8 (and a lesser 3.0 V6 that burned more fuel, IIRC), and the rare, 4.3 (Olds) diesel V6 endured a lot of unhappy owners.
The 4.3 diesel was fairly reliable, especially relative to the 5.7 V8 diesel. The problem was it was so heavy that the FWD cars it was in sagged in front, handled strangely, and never had good enough tires in front. It was noisy, and it was so rare that later in life there were seldom any regularly-available parts for them. I see them show up on Ebay and some classic car sale sites every once in a while.
