the volt signal on the dashboard flashes on and off any idea/
battery is brand new

Could you please put your trim (ie: SE, SSE, SSEi, GXP) and year in your profile?

The volt light is caused my the alternator not doing its job (or so the computer thinks this)

First things first - When you put you new battery in, did you clean the battery cables and terminals? Check these first and reply back

seei 1992, i checked all cables
it just flashes the volt light doesnt stay on, just keeps on flashing around

Please tell us how much the alternator is putting out at idle.
