Default Rear lighting/brake lights on a 66.

Hi,
We're trying to get the wiring for the rear lights working again. After a lot of hit and miss, we've got all lights firing, but no brake lights. The turn signals were giving up trouble for a while, but that seems solved. Still no brake lights.
We replaced the stoplight switch under the brake pedal, and we got some response for a little bit, and then nothing again. We also replaced a fuse. Now no brakes again.
Any ideas? What is making these lights so fussy?
I'm guessing that the metal on the edge of the light socket is what'* grounding the lines. These are kinda fussy too. They've got to be just right for the lights to fully engage. Still no brake lights.
Worst of all, my son would love to drive this car for the prom Saturday night, but it doesn't look like it'* going to happen unless we can solve this problem before then.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
