Default Neutral safety switch test

Does anyone know exactly how the neutral safety switch works, as far as wiring goes? Does the switch get a signal and if it reads park or neutral it then opens up power to the starter? I have one small wire in the plug (at the neutral switch) getting power when the key is on, however the main 10 or 12 gauge yellow wire has no power coming into the plug - does this main power wire get blocked somewhere between the neutral switch and the ignition switch on the column if the neutral switch is bad? I have power through the ignition switch, so I know it is good, but then power is lost somewhere after that as I have no power at the starter solenoid. I am baffled and frustrated. ANy help or ideas would be great. Thanks.
