Interior Lamp Delay
Hi guys,
Im wondering about my interior lighting. After entering the car [96 SSE] and closing the door, my interior lights fade right away. This is not a propblem during the day, but at night I dont even have time to get the key in the ignition before the lights go out.
According to my owners manual, there should be about a 25 second delay.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

i believe that car is supposed to do that when entering the car.....the delay should be for after you have driven the car and you remove the key the lights will remain on for the delay then the "theater dimming" will take effect

"Delayed Illumination
When you open the door, the interior lamps will come on. When you close the door with the ignition off, the interior lamps will stay on for 25 seconds, or untill the ignition is turned to an on position. Please note that locking the doors will override the delayed illumination feature and the lamps will turn off right away."

our 97 astro does the same thing, when the engine is off, open the door and the interior lights will stay on for a while, i dont know how long because ive never waited, and when you start the engine they will go out. If its not working, than maybe the delay circuit isnt working properly..

The 25 second interior lamp delay is comtroled by the Body Control Module, which grounds the circuit for 25 seconds, unless an input is received by the BCM.
So, either the BCM is failing OR thinking it is seeing an input to trigger the BCM to not apply the ground. There are some BCM tests in the FSM that can be performed, that I can provide, but I have not performed these tests personally.
A few questions;
Any aftermarket electronics installed in the car? Remote start, aftermarket sound system, etc.?
Does this happen with only the drivers door? Try entering ONLY the passenger front door, closing it and seeing if the interior lamps stay on for 25 seconds. Also try rear doors.
Does the ignition switch seem loose or does it wiggle?
So, either the BCM is failing OR thinking it is seeing an input to trigger the BCM to not apply the ground. There are some BCM tests in the FSM that can be performed, that I can provide, but I have not performed these tests personally.

I sometimes have this problem too- mine usually go out when the key goes in..but latly, when the door closes, lights go out. I've often wondered if I could somehow have the theatre dimming in my car.
