Default Electrical Issues

On my 2002 Pontiac Bonneville, the power windows, locks, and mirrors quit working. Also, the radio won't turn off when I open the drivers side door. This all happened at one time. Any ideas?

Does the radio turn off when you open the passenger door?

All the functions you describe are managed by the DDM (Driver Door Module). Either it has lost power, has failed or there is another wiring problem (? Class 2 Serial Data).

Have you checked for blown fuses yet? If not, consider that to start.

Where are my manners :( Welcome to the Club!

Hope to see some pics soon. Let me know what you find with those checks and we can proceed further.

Thanks for the welcome and the info. I took it to the dealer after checking the basic stuff and they said the fuses and stuff under the back seat were fine. They also checked the drivers door module and said it was fine too. They didn't want to spent too much time on it because there wasn't much money to be made for them at that point. The Class 2 serial data is not something that has been mentioned yet. I pulled off the door panels and checked the other window modules for pwr and all were good. The door locks will make a clicking noise, but they don't move. After a few clicks they quit making noise all together. All of this happened after I had it on a trailer and towed it across country. We kept the luggage in the car and each night we would open the doors using the remote. On the third morning, they wouldn't work anymore. They only thing I did other than strap it down on the tow trailer was put the chains on front and back. In the front area, I tried to avoid anything that wasn't structural, but I wonder if a wire bundle runs through that area and I chaffed it.

If the dealer checked the DDM and was able to communicate with it using a Tech 2 then your serial data line will be intact. This is also the case if you had been able to unlock the doors with the remote (as the remote control door lock receiver sends the signal to the DDM via the class 2 data bus).

I didn't see a response about whether the radio turns off when the passenger door is opened. Also, does the car still start and run and are you certain the battery has an adequate charge? You didn't specify if these functions don't work only from the driver door controls. Can you open and close the other windows from the control on the respective door? Will the passenger side door lock switch lock all the doors. Does you window lock-out button seem to work (lamp turns on/off when pressed).

At first I considered the problem may be the master switch control. This could explain everything except for the radio not turning off when the door is opened.

In basic terms, the doors work on a subsystem of their own. Each door has a module which can cause the door to lock or unlock, open or close the window, and report the status of whether the door is open or not. Front doors go further than this because of the mirror control.

The modules (one per door) all talk on a bus of their own. The driver door module acts as a master (and gateway to the rest of the vehicle) and anthing relating to the doors is communicated to/from the car via the DDM. Normally, when the ignition is off the radio will continue to play until a door is opened, 10 minutes has elapsed or there is a signal sent by another module on the data bus due to a low battery condition. Mirror control for the passenger side is the same. The DDM sends the appropriate signal to the passenger door module. Virtually all the failures you have relate (collectively) around the DDM (for the reasons I've specified).

It may be possible for another door module to be causing problems on the door control data bus and therefore interfering with normal operation "more globally". The dealer should have used a Tech 2 and attempted communication with each module. There are diagnostics to lock and unlock each door independantly and to open and close each window independantly using the Tech 2. There is also other valuable diagnostic information available for this with the Tech 2.

This could be somewhat complicated and difficult to troubleshoot without the correct tools. Before I say this however, I'm curious about the responses to my previous questions.

First off, thanks for taking the time to help me here.

None of the windows or locks work from any door. The car starts and runs great. I just put in a new battery about two weeks ago because it still had the original battery and I figured it was just a matter of time before it stranded us. When I use the remote clicker, the gas door makes a clicking noise, like it'* trying to work, but after about the third or fourth time, it even quits making sounds. I can go back later and it'll do the same thing. The radio doesn't turn off from either of the front doors. I don't have the car with me right now, so I can't check the window lock out switch. I did play around with it some to see if it made a difference. I did some basic meter work and found out that when I hit the lock button, pwr came through switch and then when I released it, no pwr. All of this makes me wonder if there is some common ground causing this issue because power is available at these locations. I read one of the threads where someone had a similiar problem with only the passenger side causing these issues and it turned out to be a ground underneath the drivers seat. It was an older Bonneville where mine is a 2002.

I'm going to have to dig into some diagrams. Hopefully I can do this sooner than later for you. When you're talking about similar problems in an older Bonneville, year is important. Once the 2000 model year rolled around, the operation of the door components change dramatically. This was the year they impleneted a whole bunch of additional module/computer based control to the vehicle.

Default IT IS FIXED

Contrary to what the dealership told me, it ended up being the Module in the Drivers door. If the dealership had done their job, this would have been fixed weeks ago. I ended up taking it to local guy that specializes in Automotive Electrical. He hooked it up to the scanner and that door module was the only one that the scanner could not communicate with. I'm going to get with the dealership on Monday and discuss why they couldn't have figured the same thing out. They went so far at to tell me "it was NOT that module." They did of course take my money for the service. Thanks for all of your help and taking the time to help get this figured out.

I can't say I'm surprised. Frankly, I was at a bit of a loss when you said they stated it was fine. This is the one component that links ALL the functions together that you had problems with. Glad it is solved though. I'm curious to hear what the dealership will tell you
