A big empty parking lot on the weekend is a good place to do it. Stay away from power lines, light poles (metal) and drain grates.
The sensor in the trunk has nothing to do with the DIC, only the compass. You should remove your cluster and check all the connections. About a 1-hour job, and the procedure is in Techinfo.
