Default Calling all SSE owners!

My life'* goal now is to figure out what the hell is wrong with 87-91 bonneville DIC + compass.. I have spend the past two hours searching google for just a hint of anything.. but nothing, except the company that makes XM radio'* head units.. also made our i/p.. so I wonder how long the head units will hold up .

Ok guys randman1and I have worked on this before.. and I have re-initated it.. whether he wants to still participate is up to him.. and the rest of you. Here is what we will need.

One 92+ [with the new design, SSE[i] only.. and it has to function properly]
A handful of 87-91 SSE'* with broken ones..
And whomever has a working one.. we need you all!

We will have to figure out how we can all communicate in one grouping.. but first we need some participants!

Let me fill you guys in on what has all been going on. Yesterday I recieved my new I/P from a Junkyard in Colorado, they garunteed it blah blah [I just needed the new one, and would go from there]. Well I installed it, and what do you know? the DIC works.. but the Compass does not. So I figured.. maybe the display is broken.. so, I put in the Compass from the old I/P, and neither worked! I put the new one back into the new I/P and just the DIC worked. So I though, perhaps the Compass has been causing the problems.. so I put in the old DIC in the new I/P and what do you know? it works! but the compass does not.. and neither compass works, and the old one makes neither DIC or Compass work, but the new one makes both DIC'* work. So basically we are going to need to figure out what is related between the Compass, and DIC, because I found out last night unplugging the Compass from the I/P makes neither work.. [my appolgies randy, I guess I was wrong, sorry if you did it last night]. I have the old I/P which is total trash [the speedo and tach were never correct, and it kept saying I had a full tank of gas, when I had half a tank! but the DIC works {with the new compass} works in it.. so it will come in handy a some point in time].

Post back with whomever will help.. well will go from there how we will all communicate quickly, and efficiantly.

adding to the list of people we need: electrical engineer.. or a really big book on how to be an electrical engineer in 24 hours. I have removed the circuit board from the back on my old I/P, and there is only one trace which is related between the DIC, and Compass, and both the old and new compass have the same results.. no variance there. So basically we need an electrical engineer here.

KEOTOK is an electrical engineer. He'* the first to succesfully transplant a HUD, and has your generation of Bonneville, as well as the FSM'*.

well like i've stated there is something up with my compass.. and I need someone who can tell me what i'm doing, because this is beyond me now.. Today I will be posting up some pictures of what I have come across. Also, I am thinking, because the new compass makes the DIC work.. that maybe the display is shot?? because I can just de-solder the old one, and put it on the new... sound acceptable? I am absolutly determined to get this thing to work!

How would you desolder something with like 50 solder points that you can't just pull out one side and remove it? In the past I have drilled the hole out.. but is that the proper way?

Before you desolder, have you checked the voltage going to the Compass? I think the crosstalk between these two units is 12VDC (I'll have to check this). So if the Compass is not getting power neither is the DIC. Or more likely the second Compass is screwing up the power going to the DIC. The first compass' power circuit is probably fine therefore passing the power to the DIC. These displays are pretty rugged, it'* probably something on the control section of the circuit board.

I have the car schematics on this, I'll try to look it up this weekend and let you know the signals going to both units.

The proper way to desolder is with either a desoldering tool, or with desoldering tape (this is a copper mesh) which you put flux on the solder point, place the tape over this, and then place a soldering iron on top of that. The solder will transfer from the hole to the tape. It will take patience and time to do this on a 50 or so pin display.

As far as this copper mesh you speak of, can I pick that up at radio shack? and is it reusable?
