Default 96-SSE, locks door automatically, why?

I noticed my dads 96 locks the doors when you put it into gear but when you take it out of gear it does not unlock the doors, perhaps this is a 96 thing. Perhaps its a malfunction. I know on my 98 it will unlock the doors when you put it into park.

Is there a way to kill the door lock system? IRRC there are a few actuators in the center console, is one of these for the door locks? Is there another way to kill the automatic door locks.

I should add, the doors unlock when you turn the car off but not when it is in park. This is a big problem in a place where it gets 50 below 0 on a winter and warming up the car is required everytime you use it in the winter.

Actuators in the center console has me a bit confused.

This is all controlled by programming, under locks in teh owners manual. I changed mine and can say..there is one mode where you get no response from the system. Keep that tidbit in mind and you won't feel like you can't find the right mode.
