They work, and they are not pitted at all. The rust you saw is from the car sitting overnight in the rain.

The steel they use in rotors is not stainless. It oxidizes and rust VERY quickly, but only on the surface. Even just swiping a finger across it will remove the rust. It has absolutely no effect on braking performance/lifetime.
