ok i juts got a 95 bonneville. who had it before spraypainted the hood and fenders with spray paint blah.. very ugly. there is decent paint under the spray paint. could i get soem very fine sand paper and sand it down to the original paint? and then buff/polish it out?

In short, yes that is a possibility. Take your time and figure out when to stop(but not the hard way!). In all probability the paint underneath is in pretty rough shape as well and that is why it was repainted. I would definitely give it a shot though. You will need 1500 and 2000 grit wetsand paper, a rotary buffer that is 0-3k rpms and some pads and polish of your choice. Take a shot at it and show us the results!

i got all the tools but the sand paper. im a certified detailer
but yeh i never sanded a car with sand paper :( so i dont know ill try what you said worst thing that can happen is go to deep.

try using some good paint thinners first. they should take off the crappy spray can paint with out a problem, but they wont harm the factory paint one bit

then if the paint under it is good, polish it, dont just sand off the spray paint, thats a waste of time...

hmm good point ill try that 1st!! any ideas on brands? or any cheap paint thinner? ive nerv done this before so any ideas would be awsome. like supplys? :0 ill post before and after pics

Lacquer thinners should do the job nicely, where think rubber gloves (the ones that are ment for more thing a one time use) soak a rag and wipe ans area to see how it works.

make sure it DOES NOT touch the clear plactic of the headlighs, or you'll be looking to buy new ones.. (take them off the car)


can you get us some pics of what the car looks like now?

I would think that with either sand paper or paint thinner, you will have a pretty hard time applying consistent pressure and might end up with unevenness from rubbing too hard. My guess is that the spray paint is on there to cover up major blemishes. You might do all that work to find out it needs repainted anyway.

well it does need repainting. it was a freeway car and the hood paint is warn down.. but the spray paint looks very bad ill take pics tonight and post.
