The best to clean them really, just use house hold detergent.

I detail my sister-in-law'* SUV in the summer when we visit, she lives in Clarkston MI, and there is always a lot of caked in salt almost to the consistency of cement imbedded in the floor mats. I pre soak the mats in a laundry wash sink prior to placing them in a washing machine. It is best to rinse the mats once or twice before placing in the washing machine.

I found the washing mashine good, but for the carpet in the car, I used some resolve power cleaner that you scrubbed into the carpet then vaccumed up w/ no water. It worked great for that purpose, and it also took the salt and other junk out.
