Anybody ever see a paint failure like this?
The rest of the paint on this car looks great and properly seasoned. Except for this rear quarter.
I hope it'* visible... the blue lines show down to the edge where the bad area begins. the red lines show the length of the bad area. It looks like somebody threw something acidic on it. The clearcoat is off, but if you can see, it doesn't have any edge like it cracked off. It has drip marks like it dripped off.
Counter to that, the paint is fine on the rear door and starts to go to crap at the rear panel. I checked, there is no body fill on any part of the panel. ????

Looks like a different panel. I see a slight change of tone from the panel to the rear door.

thats why i realy dont like doing clear blends on a car, the UV light will eventually cause the edge to fade back like that. and who ever did it was a HACK, if you are going to do a clear blend then it should be donr on the MOST NARROW part of the panle, in this case the Sail panle (where the roof meets the quarter) which leads me to the only thing i (as a painter) dont like about our cars it that there is no "break" line at the roof like on alot of other cars do.
And another thing, just because therer paint work, DOESNT mean theres body work, it could have been painted simply because of a scratch or maybe a small door ding. it doent mean there was major damage.

also looking at it again im thinking it might have been a very low quality paint and was applied very poorly. can you get a pic from a different angle, and maybe a little closer

The fuel door has the same problem, I didn't check that for alignment. I only looked down the line of the car side (which had no show of any area out of line) and quickly checked the doors and the jambs.
No accidents on the carfax. Corporate lease for a year, then a single owner for the balance of time. In PA you can't completely rely on carfax, unless the accident gets a police report, which would be a bigee. Anything two parties can drive away from, or if it is self inflicted, there'* a good chance you will get no record in carfax. FYI.
Yeah, a good scratching makes the most sense. A spread of one, like a firm bush. He'd have to be stone stupid to do a foot and a half wide spread for a couple of scratches. It would also explain why it is just worked up to the back door. He did the work himself, or had his brother-in-law Earl do it, who once spray painted a lawn chair. Then he just lived with the paint as it failed from weather, salt... whatever.
I'm officially checking out the car tomorrow. I'll take it out and get a decent picture. It'* that bugger Majestic Teal color, which can be any shade at anytime depending on the light. But it could also help cover an amateur blend if I do it.
A Pontiac dealer has the car and they are figuring what to do with it. The car is great except in a quick check, it was plain the plenum is leaking and it has the bad paint. The uppers and lowers I can do with some supervision, the paint I could do a passable job if I asked you guys some questions.
I'm going to pursue it, because if they could wholesale, they would have done it the day they got it. Probably any money they get for it is found money. We'll see.
Thank y'all for the help.
