GM 10bolt 8.5" rear diff...most common GM diff pretty much..
That'* what I run in my Firebirds.
It does have 10 bolts that hold the ring gear to the carrier.
A 12 bolt has a larger ring gear and 12 bolts that hold its ring gear to the carrier. That way it can handle higher torque loads.

The covers are shaped differently.

yup, covers are almost always different between different Diffs..
u should see The Dana Diffs parts catalouge, it gets really intresting to find the right parts somedays..
