Getting ready to do a pan-drop transmission fluid and filter change on my 95' Monte Carlo Z34 3.4 DOHC V6 with the 4T60-E. Tranny has 140k on it and the fluid isn't in the best condition. Shifts fine and drives great. I'm planning on doing the fluid change this weekend given weather holds up, so I need some advice on the tranny filter seal. The last 4T60-E fluid change I did on my Oldsmobile 98 was a breeze because the filter seal came out when I pulled the filter down. I'm just gonna guess that I won't get lucky this time so I'm looking for some advice on how to remove the filter seal from the tranny?

I use a pilot bearing remover tool. Something like this:

Pilot Bearing Slide Hammer & filter;
is the seal typically called a "grommet" or do they more often just say "seal" or is it 50/50 both ways? ... no biggie just idle curiosity.

But my main question is - does the Pilot Bearing Slide Hammer work on most any (or at least the vast majority of) transmissions? I SEEM to remember reading somewhere, if using a mere screwdriver or similar improvised method, some sort of care should be taken to avoid ... um, er, scratching or otherwise distorting ... "don't bugger it up" IOW! ... working from memory here, having never replaced a tranny filter - and my Blazer needs new one.

Also, I think I remember others might have used a hook, maybe, which I've got a set of, but those are real sharp. Anyhooo, if I didn't HAVE to have the Pilot Bearing Slide Hammer - there'* maybe sumpin else as alternative I read - and maybe forgot. Honestly not sure ... maybe I'm overthinkin it - however if anybody sees this and it jogs the memory, thanks kindly.

If it doesn't come out easy, most techs leave it in, and just install a new filter....

Or if you really want it out, just take a screw driver, and hit the edge from the side, and collapse it inward, comes right out....
