Time to start pulling on harnesses, checking contacts in connectors, and checking grounds.....

Yeah, could possibly be a wiring/connection issue. Then again, the bulb could fail for good in two more days.

If you have some washboard road around you might want to make use of it to help diagnose.

The street I use to go in and out of my neighborhood has been milled up for re-paving, so I'm going over a washboard road several times a day. So far, there hasn't been a repeat of Tuesday'* temporary headlight failure but I'm monitoring the situation closely. I'd love to know what kind of bulbs GM put in the car at the factory. One lasted seven years and the other is coming up on eight years.

So for the past month, it'* been a real crap-shoot whether I have one headlight burning or two and sometimes it comes and goes while I'm driving. The past couple of days, it'* been out more than it'* been burning, so I finally broke down this afternoon and replaced the driver'* side bulb yet again. For the moment, it seems to be working fine. How long it'll work is anybody'* guess. The car is due for its state inspection next month and I usually get it done while I'm off work for Thanksgiving break, but I think I'll get it done sooner, hopefully before it goes wonky again.

I would use some dielectric grease on each plug .

I have had many that would keep burning out the same bulb in a short amount of time due to terminal issues in the bulb connector. Check the terminals for being over heated and low tension. If you find a concern you can replace the terminal if the connector body is OK, or replace the connector pig tail. Bad connection cause the bulb to fail. If you want to use a dielectric grease I would recommend using dielectric lube, it'* thinner than the grease and less likely to distort terminals. Hope you find this helpful.

I do use dielectric grease in moderation. Never heard of dielectric lube. I'll have to check into that. What I use is about the consistency of Neosporin.

Now here'* a weird twist. After I wrote the last post, I got curious and pulled out the two-month-old bulb that I had replaced the other day and tested it with an ohm meter. It tested out fine. I'm taking the car to get inspected after work tomorrow while everything is consistently working okay.

I think I may have isolated the problem, at least on the driver'* side. I noticed driving home for work that headlight was out yet again after replacing the bulb a little more than a week ago. When I got home, I took the headlight assembly out again, removed the bulb from the housing, unplugged it, plugged back in again and re-seated it in the housing. Voila! It was working again. On closer examination, it appears the socket connector is slightly discolored, so maybe when I briefly had those cheapo LEDs in there, the transformer box on the LED wasn't the only thing that got melted.

After I got the headlight working again, I immediately took the car to be inspected, which I hadn't managed to do this week. It passed and now I have a year to get the problem sorted out once and for all. I guess the next step will be to replace the socket connector. Hopefully, that will do the trick. I'm really getting sick of this shtuff.
