Default Flashing lights when locking / unlocking car

My wife has a 2004 Impala and when she locks or unlocks her doors from the key fob, the running lights flash. I would like to do this with my Bonneville. Has anyone here done this and already know the procedure?
I was thinking that I could grab power from the interior light circuit and feed it back via a relay to the running lights circuit, the only problem with this idea is how to keep the running lights from coming on when the doors are open.

That would be neat trick. I don't know of anyone that has done this, but I would really like to see a write up on how you do it. That would go in tech info for sure.

I spoke to a friend about this today and he said to build a delay circuit, a simple 555 timer should do the trick. Hook this into the door lock / unlock circuit. When the key fob is pressed, the door lock gets power and powers the 555 circuit, this powers a relay that powers the running lights. The 555 circuit will keep the running lights on long enough to see them.

As soon as I get a bit of free time, I am going to try this out.

I was thinking around those lines. Grabbing power from the lock circuit is the only way
