Default 2013 equinox 2.4 engine question

I’m currently looking at a 2013 equinox with the 2.4 eco boost engine with 116,000 miles on it. I have heard about piston ring issues for that engine from 2010-2013. This particular equinox hasn’t shown any signs of oil burn yet. Is it worth the gamble to spend $7,000 on this vehicle?

So what do you guys think? Is it worth the risk? Or should I keep searching?

Based on the price you stated, in my area and if it is clean with no damage that'd be a good deal for that car from a dealer lot or a private party according to NADA. I don't know if yours is FWD or AWD or the other options it has, but I spec'd it down to as little as possible and that is still a good deal.

Mechanically, it seems like it is worth the risk since it'* not showing up on carfixer007'* VIN search.

I don't know how you know if it hasn't shown signs of oil consumption yet. If you are super duper sure it doesn't have this problem then great! Go for it.

I dug around on the Internet a bit. The rates of oil loss that seem to be quoted for this issue are more than one quart in 1,000 miles, and many have said that GM references a loss of more than a quart in 2,000 miles as unacceptable. If it were me, I'd arrange to drive it 500 miles to see if it is really losing oil or not. The 500 miles would be mostly on the freeway and occasionally I'd get off the freeway just to come to a stop and then get back on with my foot in it. Carefully measure the oil level before starting your drive, then again afterwards. If it has lost a bunch then either let it go or beat the price down knowing you'll have to add oil often.

It would be worth your wasted day driving it around to avoid wasted days fixing it later.
