So I’ll have to take the timing cover off again either way. However, if I find that stage 1 and 2 appear to be in time using the cam plates on the back of the camshafts, it would indicate a stuck advanced cam phaser on the bank 1 intake camshaft wouldn’t it?

I’m disassembling the front timing cover today and while I had the valve covers off I checked the camshafts for play with a 19mm wrench to see if the phasers were locked. Bank 1 intake camshaft had play. However after removing the timing cover and putting the engine into stage 1 and 2, the cam phaser appears to be locked into place.
Both stage 1 and 2 are in time and the timing plates line up with the flats of the camshafts. Timing marks on the cam phasers are in the correct positions as well with the right amount of chain links in between them. So this engine is in time.
Am I right to condemn the Bank 1 Intake cam phaser as a defective part? (This was a new part)

Do these phasers use a pin and hole to lock?

Yes they do. Here’* a picture of the backside of a cam phaser/vvt sprocket

I suspect that cam phaser. Does it act differently than the bank 2 intake phaser?

On the waveforms it stays advanced while the engine is in base timing. The other phasers are right where they need to be.

Make sure the hole is not ovaled out.

I have good news. Yesterday, after I warrantied the intake cam phaser at oreillys, I got right to it and reinstalled the phaser and other timing components along with everything else besides fluids in order to let the gasket maker cure over night.
Today I added fluids and started it up and have no timing codes.
I also smoke tested it since it’* been apart so many times and only have a small leak from the cam solenoid actuator seals on bank 2. Afterwards I went and drove the car for about 30 minutes and it didn’t miss a beat. Still no P0016 code thankfully.
I think it’* safe to say that I’ve solved the timing issues which was due to defective parts.

Should I be concerned about how high the engine load values are at idle and at cruising speeds?
While idling it shows the engine load percentage is at 35-40%
At 65-70 mph just under 2000 rpm it reads about 70%
