I did not do anything (so far) other than change both oils in transfer and differential. Very little oil came out of the rear diff when drained..both have spec'd amounts now. And no crabbing issues as I had prior to the oil changes.

Ahhh . . . so you changed the oil in both. From this:

I think the next step I'd try is:

You might be able to just remove the drive shaft and leave the half-shafts on. Make sure the yokes on either end will stay in without the drive shaft attached. That would probably change the behavior. I wouldn't drive at highway speeds like this, just enough to test and that'* it.

If the differential was low on oil then it might have some seized or ruined clutches. The clutches are supposed to stay immersed.
