Default 05 Impala 3500 engine noise

My daughter'* 2005 Impala 3500 engine went belly up.... I put a used engine in and immediately upon started I heard a funny noise....it is not a ticking or clatter like a bad bearing but a squealing noise like you hear if a tensioner or pulley is bad.... so I pulled off the serpentine belt off and the engine still made that noise..... the noise sounds like it is coming from the area of the flywheel to torque converter...... what should I try to find the noise?

The noise is closest to the Bell Housing and it is NOT a rod knock.

Are you sure the torque converter didn't come out at all while changing engines?

Not that I'm aware of, when I put engine back in it looked like the TC did not move any............. how would I check for that now that the engine is in?

That sounds like the starter is not releasing.

Exactly.... I was going to tell you as much..... I had a friend this morning get under the car and we started engine, and loads of sparks flew from the starter.....so I took it off and took it to our Advance Auto a mile away and had it tested and it would not even work and sparks flew out of it and it came back as,"Bad"..... I have a new starter coming in the morning and I'll put it on then..........................

When you spend 10 days (after work and on weekends) pulling an engine and putting in a used one.....and then you hear that noise when you start that engine the first time......you want to cry.....BUT I did not hear the clattering that you regularly hear when bearings are bad...............................
