I think you can occasionally find a gem in the less expensive brands. The key is to research feedback on the web, but not on the tire manufacturer sites.

I tend to agree with this wholeheartly with one caveat, I get e-mail alerts from the NHTSA on recalls, most of them are tire recalls and of the tire recalls I would say at least 90% of them are for some brand that I've never heard of. Pay attention to country of origin also, I would stay away from any tire manufactured in China.
