Did a hack fix for plastic dash grille covering light/twilight sensor popping off
1997 DeVille E'legance: Those plastic tabs around the plastic grille on the dash covering the twilight/light sensors are not the best engineering accomplishment. Actually, the tabs are probably okay. The soft dash material they are supposed to secure into gets soft and looser over time (and the heat through the windshield doesn't help). Mind barely stayed on.
I considered dabs of JB Weld on each of the many tabs to "extend" them a bit, but I didn't think it would hold well enough. I decided to try this new
I had. But that wouldn't work because I really needed the exact opposite of the welder'* concept—to heat the very ends of the staples.
So I went old school and used a blow torch on the staples held with needle-nose plyers to get them red hot, melting a bunch around the tabs on the bottom side of the grille cover. It'* not the prettiest from below, but it ended up working well. Not a lot of time to get them placed before it cools. I had to press a couple of spots in harder than others on the dash, but it hold in place now.
This is where someone tells me, "Why didn't you just ___________?"
