So, I've noticed my trunk has a leak. Some of the Orange sealant that lines the inside of the trunk is black and I believe the seal has lost its integrity. Has anyone else experienced this? My trunk lining is moldy. :(

I'm guessing I have to scrape the old sealant off and replace it? Or can I go right over where the leaky spots are and just put new sealant on?

Some input would be cool. I have a 1996 Buick Park Ave. Thanks in advance!

Before doing anything, dry the trunk out and get rid of the mold.

Your leak could be coming from a number of sources, but I would start with inspecting the weather strip around the lip of the trunk opening and the seals around the bolts that fasten the taillights to the vehicle. Depending on how flexible you are and how much you trust your friend, you can also climb in the trunk, have your friend close the trunk lid (hence the trust part) and look for daylight openings. Then, with a flashlight and your friend spraying the trunk area with a garden hose, look to see if you can determine where the water is coming in.

First, I would remove everything in the trunk, even the trim...get in there with a flashlight and have someone wet it down, completely, to verify exactly where the leak is....could be more than one spot.....do trunk seal, rear window, tail light assemblies, etc. .......

I had some water coming into my trunk a couple years ago. It was coming from a crack in the body. The crack was hidden under the decorative trim that is around the rear windshield. The crack was adjacent to the bottom of the side of the window. A friend had popped out the trim and found the leak after we water tested the trunk. I think the crack was caused when I was rear-ended by a pickup truck. We filled the crack and now the trunk is dry.

The black seal along the top of my trunk is cracked up and deteriorated but no water comes in there. Weird.

just picked up a 1996 park ave and there was a pool of water in the spare tire well , looked at the tail lights and mine where leaking in the same spot ... bad gasket.
