the car will have to be scanned with a scanner capable of body codes, there are ton of possible failures and you need to narrow it down.

Tell us a little about when it happens and about the car? How many miles. Have any of the wheel bearing hubs been replaced? When does this light turn on--going straight down the road or when the wheel is being turned at slow speeds such as around parking lots?

My car started occasionally turning on the light when I would move change the steering wheel at slow speeds. Then my tire rotation place told me my bearing showed some play and tried to sell me a new one; they mentioned the light coming on sometimes is a symptom of the bearing being looser. For the record the bearing was just as the acceptable limit for in/out play of .005 IIRC. Replaced bearing and light didn't come on for long time until the other front wheel was ready to be replaced.

It can be the steering wheel position sensor and it might just be a connector at one of the 4 wheels that doesn't have a good connection.

There are quite a few possible causes for the SSS light to come on, and you can spend a lot of money listening to people tell you they know what the problem is. You need to take the car to a shop that scan for ABS codes. A dealership can certainly do that with their Tech II scanners, but I find most transmission shops have a scanner with that capability as well.

Some of the possible causes:
  • bad wheel speed sensor (could be one of 4)
  • yaw sensor
  • steering wheel position sensor
  • EBCM
  • loss of signal or open circuit to WSS (break in wire)
Justin gave you the best advice ... get the car scanned for DTC'*. Otherwise you could spend a lot of money chasing this down.
