Default Noob questions 1995 88 Royale

Hey,

I just picked up a 95 Olds 88 Royale for a daily driver. It'* a clean car, 55k miles, leather interior, and once I finish replacing the uim, it should be a good driver. The car only came with one set of keys and doesn't have a remote key fob for the remote entry. Does anyone here know which fob is the correct one for the car? I've seen several listed on eBay for the cutlass supreme and the silhouette, but I haven't seen any for an 88/98. Will one from the same year park ave or bonneville work?

Also, I'd like to install a factory compass/autodim rear view mirror from an LS or LSS. What components besides the mirror would be required to make the swap work?

Lastly, at some point I'll probably replace the factory 15" rims with a set from another gm product. I've had my eye on the 17" rims from the 02 Bonneville SSEi. Does anyone here know what the offset for our rims is? I'm hoping that Bonneville rims will bolt up without any clearance issues.

Thanks in advance!

Sam

well about the FOB...my 94 does not have keyless, the RPO code is not there, also the orginal owner I bought it from did not have the FOBs

However my grandmas 94 olds 88 has FOBs. it was a non-group option, must have been purchased seperate and not standard with royall model

No idea how the mirror system works, I am not terribly impressed with the autodimm mirror on my SSEi compared to the old school one on the olds, would never make the effort to swap.

Wheels - 5-115 bolt pattern, I replaced the 15" rims on my 94 88 with some from a set of 16" from a 95 LSS

Also how LONG has the UIM been failed? it is possible if it has been a while and water has made its way into the oil into the motor your bearings maybe behond repair and the motor will fail soon after you get it running again, just something to think about.

Default uim finished

Thanks for the keyless entry code. I checked the tire cover and the car does have the code.

I've put about 300 mostly highway miles on the car since replacing the uim. The engine runs fine, doesn't make any noise, and has decent power. However yesterday and today when I started the engine after it had sat for a short while, it blows a puff of smoke out the exhaust. This of course has me worried. It doesn't seem to have used any oil, and the coolant level hasn't dropped.

Think this might be the first sign of bearing damage? What should I have checked?

Thanks,

Sam

A puff of smoke should not indicate bearing damage. Do you know if it'* water or oil?

After changing the intake you changed the oil?

Did you swap the intake out of necessity or choice?

Bill,

I just ran out to my car and checked. The smoke is blush, doesn't smell like coolant, and kinda smells like carbon.

Here'* what has happened. Bought the car with 55,005 miles. Drove it around town a bit over the next couple days, maybe put on 12 miles, and the coolant level never dropped in the reservoir. Couple days later, I drove it to work which involves a 50 mile highway trip. The service receipts indicated that it had been almost 6k miles since the last oil change, and the oil looked dark, (but not milky or contaminated) so I did an engine flush, changed the oil, fuel filter, and did a fuel injection cleaner at 55080 miles. I noticed the coolant was low in the radiator and reservoir. Topped it off and drove it 4 miles home.

I checked the coolant the next day and it was low again. So I looked around on here, read about the uim problem, and took it immediately over to he mechanic and had a new uim installed (as well as the new aluminum lim gaskets and the other assorted parts) The shop changed the oil again after the uim was replaced.

The car'* windows have a light tint, so I can't tell if the car smokes at all under acceleration. I'll have a friend drive it tonight so I can follow and see what comes out of the tailpipe.

I wouldn't think that bearing damage would make the car smoke at startup. But I don't know if the uim had been leaking before I bought the car. I don't think the car had seen much highway use when I bought it, so there is a chance it didn't give way until I got it out on the highway.

I parked the car on a flat spot, waited, and the oil level is now reading down a bit on the stick (down to the 3nd hole, which I'm assuming is roughly 1/4 -1/2 quart) This is after about 80 miles, so it does appear to be using oil now.

GRRRRR

Default Engine is toast

Hey all. Sorry I haven't gotten back to anybody for a while. I've been either working or out of town. I changed the oil in my car again w/ valvoline 10w30, drove it a few miles, and it still smoked like a diesel. It'* gotten progressively worse and now pretty much smokes whenver the engine is under any load.

I took it back to the shop that did the work, and they agree that it is burning oil. They are saying that the rings or possibly valve guides were damaged from the coolant, because it'* corrosive. I told them that I didn't think that a failed uim would cause the car to smoke without having the bottom end start to make a bunch of noise first. I've ohly put 310 miles on the car since the new uim.

From what I've read on here, the general consensus seems to be that a failed uim that isn't fixed right away will cause the bearings in the bottom end of the engine to fail (sometimes as long as several thousand miles after the intake is replaced.)

But I haven't found anyone who experienced an engine that smokes.

Could something have fallen into the engine when they were replacing the LIM gaskets? If the old ones didn't come off cleanly, they would've had to scrape or grind the old ones off. I may have them pull the heads to see if the cylinders are scored from debris., but I hate to throw more money at an engine that is already toast. ... and I'm not looking for a scapegoat/free engine. If this is from a failed UIM, then I'll deal with it and move on.

I've looked at buying a used 3.8 but am worried that I'd be buying more trouble. Has anyone here replaced their n/a 3.8? I'm curious what others have paid.

Thanks,

Sam
