I you have ugly red stuff dripping out a coil pack you likely need a new coil pack.
I have a2000 buick park ave that would surge forward at a stop sign or red light, it would die as well but would start up right away. turned out to be the mass air flow sensor, i replaced it and have not had a problem since, also at troubleshootmyvehicle.com there is a certified mechanic that wants to help do it yourselfers. he has a step by step procedure on how to test your coil packs and icm, hope this helps
Pop the bonnet in the dark; engine running, and see if there are any sparkies or strange glows in the wires; keep your hands out of the engine compartment because you can not see the belt, pulleys, fans, etc. My 93 Buick LeSabre was running rough and I looked at it the dark; I had put a new set of wires on the car but I got the cheap ones; I could see the spark traveling down the ignition wire on number 1; leaking past the insulation. My lesson learned, don't go with the cheapest anything; buy at least the mid grade.
I don't know if they have already told you to clean all the grounds or not; if not, then that should be done.
On the crank sensor, they can do funny things. On my sister'* 98 LeSabre, I drove the car, started cold no problem. Drove it 8 miles, parked, went into a shop, came out, it started, drove a mile and it stalled. Started back up no problem. Eventually the car died completely and it was the crank sensor.

Sorry for the long wait for updates, life got in the way! But yes, I've put a lot of drive time on the car since doing the ICM swap + thermal paste and the problem hasn't come back. I think we can safely chalk it up to 'faulty ICM.' 
In the meantime, I've re-wrapped the starter lead, replaced the brakes, and the heater core to get it blowing heat for winter.
Next problem I want to tackle is the front window motors (only the rear roll down.) Any hints? I know it'* a hell of a job. Heh.
Then, maybe I can fix the intermittently-working sometimes-jumping speedometer, if it'* not fixed already. I had to move the wiring harness going into the PCM while I was doing the heater core the other day, and strangely enough the speedo has worked flawlessly since then.
Maybe I'll get lucky. The best problems are the ones that solve themselves
