Has the transmission been serviced before, pan drop/filter/ DexronVI fluids?
How many miles are on the 08 Lacrosse? Is the fluid at the full line hot?
Burnt fluid is not good, indicates worn clutches, & may need a rebuild.
IMHO it may be best to have a transmission shop inspect, & check for transmission codes.

Agree with Soft Ride. I'd tow it there too, unless it is next door.

Since the fluid smells burned, you've likely got a major issue that'* been brewing for a long time. A simple pan drop and filter swap miiiiight have a remote chance of resolving your issue but it'd be very slight. In my book it'd be worth a shot in my driveway just because it'* not too difficult or expensive (compared to the alternative). I'd do it knowing that I'm likely throwing an additional ~$60.00+time+elbow grease at a ~$2,500.00 overhaul. In the off chance that it does work, it probably won't be for long based on your description so far.

How long have you been driving like this?

May have a problem with the shift solenoids....Have you scanned for transmission codes?

Tray22 If you could answer our questions, that would be very helpful.
It would be best to take the car to a transmission shop and have them scan it.
The electronic transmission will store trouble codes & may ultimately describe what is wrong with your transmission.

Does anyone else think that the linkage set up may be out, or bent, or similar?

I don't. Based on what is described I suspect valve body issues, maybe shift solenoids are dead. A/B solenoids OFF/OFF is third gear, right? What I don't know on a 4T65 is if solenoids are OFF/OFF and you manually select [1] if it will go into first gear etc. as described.

Tray22, have you checked the wiring to the transaxle for damage etc.?
