I have searched but still can not find a good answer to this. What is the difference in these two different part numbers for what appears to be the same ATF fluid?

I poked on the interwebbs a bit and have no idea what the difference is. I just go for the Supertech (generic walmart brand) Dexron-VI. As I understand it, the standards required by the Dexron-VI licensing are very stringent, worlds ahead of the Dex/Merc that anybody can do anything with nowadays.

Well, you figure that a couple of hours wasted at minimum wage would get you about 3 bottles of supertech fluid...

You are half way to refilling the transmission after a pan drop at that point.

Yes, that is what I did, because I could not find Dexron VI anywhere but Walmart. None of the parts shops seemed to carry it, at least not listed on their websites.

Update on this thread just in case it might help somebody.

It "appears" the difference in the part numbers of Dexron VI I posted above is as follows:

88861954 (10-9030) Discontinued & Replaced by 88865602 (10-9395)

But, after all this I found the AC Delco Dexron III at a local independant parts store: #10-9240

Use the Dexron VI; even if you can get old stock. I went through this when I replaced the fluid and filter on my 98 Buick. The VI is better, you can read up on the improvements and it can be mixed with what little bit of fluid remains in the trans.
