Anybody have oil consumption issue and do TSB 05-06-01-035A? (This is the one where you replace the exhaust valve stem seals) What were your results?
I'm using approx 1 qt every 1,600-1,700 miles. No smoke, no leaks, and the sparkplug looks good.

You have a Lucerne in your profile, but often we find that'* old information and/or just one of several cars.
It would be good to know any other history that you think might be important such as:
- How long have you owned it?
- How many miles have you owned it?
- Any engine trauma or major repairs?

- Did you pull all spark plugs or just one?
As a test, let it idle for an hour. Then put it in gear and accelerate like normal, with bonus points for having an observer watching from outside right next to it. See if there'* any bluish smoke then. If there is smoke then: yes, valve guide seals might resolve it.

I've owned it a couple of months & put 2,000 miles on it. The previous owner confirms that the oil consumption was an issue the entire time they owned it (They bough it at 20K mi and sold it at 99K mi)
They advise the only thing they did was have a water pump installed at approx 90K mi. They also said that they took it to a GM dealer but that the dealer could not find the cause of the problem. I just pulled one plug so there are 5 possible problems. Attached is a pic of the plug I pulled.
I'm mostly concerned about the oil consumption causing problems with the cat conv or the O2 sensors.

Click the icon to the left of the smiley face.....select your pic from drop down menu.......then make sure you click "Upload" in the upper right corner......easy peasy.....
Now for the bad news...if only a w/p was done, you are due for a coolant flush, COMPLETE tuneup, and transmission flush with filter, check brakes, etc.

Yep, tuneups and fluid changes dont bother me. Brakes look good. I also have the complete oil change history from the time the car was new. Its in great shape except for the consumption.

As far as that bulletin goes, I have run into this a couple times.....makes sure there are no external leaks, and then take off the valve covers, and using proper procedures, remove the rocker and ex valve spring, to makes sure the seals are seated on the bosses.....sometimes you don't even have to do that to verify......just take a magnet and run it in the oil residing in the bottom of the head, and if you may find metal ring pieces attached to the magnet, you found your problem......
Basically, the ring around the valve stem seal holds the seal onto the boss....when it breaks, the seal rides upwards and leaks.....If just one needs replacement, with the years and mileage, I would replace ALL ex and int seals.........GM is so smart, they packaged 5 ex seals to a package, so you have to buy two........how many 5 cylinder engines do they make?
