1997 Skylark Custom 3.1 liter temp rising slowly fan not working
started car cold I put the sensor back on and plugged in and turned over the car with the a/c set on turned key & >the fan was on !! Right away so ? it does come on ! So does this mean it is just the sensor and maybe the thermostat ? Which I think it is ??
because I am set to replace them now

One way to quick check the fan circuit is to start the engine and turn on the A/C to max. If the fan runs, the fan motor, relay, fuse and wiring are all okay right so ,,, I thinking sensor? or thermostat stuck open!!
Did I read it correctly that the coolant temp sensor was 2 sensors in 1? 1 feeds the PCM and the other one feeds the instrument cluster? If so, then wouldn't the sensor for the PCM be faulty and make the PCM trip the fans anyway? The PCM will only turn the fans on for 1 of 3 reasons. 1. A/C request. 2. High engine temp, 3. Faulty coolant sensor.
its not going to be the thermostat i think its the temp sensor or loose connection on that plug to the temp sensor. what happens if you leave the a/c off, if it come on with the engine cold its that the connector is open or loose still. im thinking since it wouldnt come on before its likely you need the sensor and the wiring or connector is loose.
does the a/c work when you turn it on, get cold and all? i think thats a seperate issue.

No signs anywhere of coolant leaks !!! level is where it suppose to be .. nothing on ground nothing clogging the rad the cap goes on nice tight
But I noticed today when it started cold that there was water vapours coming out of the exhaust pipe droplets until car was warmed up then nothing ? feeling like 81 yr old took me for a sucker ????
Anyways back to this >
So after I did the last test > reiterate>
start car cold after overnight but first I disconnected battery then plugged sensor back on ... Then set a/c to max and then after 5 mins connected battery turned on car & rad cooling fan went on right away .. nice and strong
I watched the fan for a about 5 mins and then I went into house posted to this thread*(see^^above) & went out too the car and the fan has stopped turning the a/c was still working even though it is not very cold has not been since i got the car * Not having any >check engine lights at all during this all Now I had one on ? *(only time I had one was of course when I pulled the comnnector off Temp coolin sensor )
I have never let the engine get more an a 1/4 over normal .. actually the gauge has sat at the normal since I owned after warming up .. and I notice one other thing which has me pissed

Water coming out of the exhaust indicates that your catalytic converter is working. If it smells sweet or is whitish, then its drinking coolant.
Your A/C system could be low on freon.

JW the a/c is not very cold at all since I got it about 1 month ago .. according to the old guy of 81 yrs.. he didnt know it had air conditioning ? He thought that was outside air lol anyways .. So he had it 6 yrs so maybe he never recharged it or ? he lying ? I figured it needs a recharge of >? R134 refrigerant ? not sure what this car is using for the refrdgerant .. cant see any info so far .? Thanks for the help btw again unreal !!!!
So Mike is that mean head gasket that these 3.1 are known for ? Oil and antifreeze have no miture of each other I see this car goes smooth fast idles very nice no misses .. dam !
No no no no. I was just sayin, water is a natural byproduct if your cat is working correctly. You said you seen water coming out the tailpipe. I said it was normal. UNLESS, it smells sweet or is whitish.
I am soory typos I meant there no oil in anti freeze no antifreeze in oil and it goes away when it warmed up It does it when it started cold ? I have not seen it do when warmed up
I went out now and it was nothing at all
