That may be the problem. It'* a lifetime warranty crank sensor from one of the local shops. The first one I put in seemed to take care of the problem for about a week, then it started doing the same thing. The next to acted the same from the beginning. I'll pick up a GM crank sensor and give it a try.

Put in an AC Delco crank sensor. Still does the same thing. On test drive, runs good, pull back in the yard, stalls. Starts right back up, pull in the garage and stalls again. Try starting with out gas, fires but won't run. Give it a little gas and it starts, goes to fast idle then goes to normal. Let it set 10 minutes, and no ignition fire.

I would have said that the reason it started again was because it was not the CKP sensor and it just waited that long to do it again. I drove my car for a year with the bad MAF sensor before it started doing the cut-off thing again. Cars are funny that way with all these sensors and computer controls.

pretty sure my 88 cultass 2.8 had one, it was just in the air duct like all the other ones. unfortunately i dont have a good manual for that. if i remeber right, that one was the only car i ever had to replace the maf, and it ran fine cold then as it warmed up it ran like a carb car with the choke stuck. then the guy at the parts place rapped on it with a screwdriver and the engine stuttered he said thats it.

I guess the '89 didn't have a MAF sensor....
Getting a little confusing here......you say it stalls, and then won't restart for 10 minutes.....
When it won't restart, do you have spark? Do you have fuel pressure?
"Try starting with out gas, fires but won't run. Give it a little gas and it starts, goes to fast idle then goes to normal. Let it set 10 minutes, and no ignition fire."
Not sure what you mean by fires but won't run.....do you mean it cranks but does not start? Or it cranks, starts, and then dies a few seconds later?
Give it a little gas and it starts.......are you using starter fluid/carb cleaner or just stepping on the gas pedal while cranking?
Let it set 10 minutes, and no ignition fire.......no ignition fire? Does that mean no spark? Or do you mean it cranks and just doesn't start?
One of the problems of stalling with this engine is, if for any reason, the battery is disconnected, the ECM forgets the position of the IAC......then, an "idle learn" procedure is needed......this involves thoroughly cleaning the throttle plate and bore, removing the IAC, cleaning the IAC passage and mating surface and cleaning the pintle on the IAC......then disconnecting the battery.......now reconnect the battery.......block your rear wheels, apply e-brake, start car, and put the vehicle in Drive(stay behind the wheel for safety reasons....with blocks and e-brake, should not need the brake pedal to be applied) and let it idle until normal operating temp........then put in park....shut the vehicle off, wait 10 seconds, then restart the car, put in drive and let it idle for about 3-5 minutes.....Shut it off, and the IAC position has been relearned by the ECM.......there is a quicker procedure with a Tech I, but who has one of those?

It cranks, fires up and quits. To keep it running, I can push on the gas pedal, and it will continue to run. After warmed up, and let it set for 10 minutes it will crank, but has no ignition fire. I've put a plug in the plug wire, had someone roll it over, and the plug won't fire.
I cleaned all the IAC passages and pintle yesterday, but I didn't do the relearn procedure. Picked up a better fuel pressure tester today, plan to recheck fuel pressure tonight, and will do the relearn on the IAC at the same time.
Mine looks like the photo. My book says MAF was only on '88.

only a few things will cause no spark. icm, ckp, pcm or the wiring for any of those. to me it seems like you have gotten a bad new icm or ckp, there have been a ton of people including myself who have had issues with store brand stuff. or you have a wiring issue between those things but those are hard to tell on obd1 cars
