Do any other GXP owners have the power steering grown/squawk noise? It is definitely not the shaft. The dealer miserably failed to correct the issue on the first try when they replaced the steering shaft. The noise happened 5 miles from their service garage. The second trip to the dealer got me a new steering gear which seemed to correct the noise until two moths later.
Now dealer says GM engineering claims noise is normal. I can post the full story if anyone is interested. Has anyone else had a dealership successfully diagnose this issue?

Watching those videos makes me think I am in my car. Every now and then when I am turning the wheel slowly to the right (backing into my parking spot at work) I get that same thing. I have an intermediate steering shaft waiting for me at the dealership right now. I guess that won't fix it.

Sure sounds like the steering fluid pump is getting funky to me. The noise is not in my GXP (As of Yet ) Dont You just love it when Mr. Goodwretch pulls out the 'ol " GM engineering says the Noise or whatever the problem is, is normal"..... BS!!!!!!! Thousands of other vehicles dont make that noise and they expect You to believe it'* normal because they cant figure it out.

My local Pontiac dealer was not sure what to do so they said they needed to call GM engineering for support. GM support recommended steering gear assembly, they ordered and replaced the steering gear. It took one day to get the part so I took a loaner since it was covered under warranty. I had less than 36,000 at the time of the steering gear replacement. Now when I go back at 38,000 they say they contact GM engineering and they recognize this as a normal noise. I am very mad with both the dealer and GM. It is unbelievable that two mechanics tell me there is a problem but some guy sitting in an office somewhere (gm engineer) can call this normal. I hope you have better luck, I will keep posting my progress here if this is the correct section of the forum. Make sure you get something in writing that they will correct the noise if it comes back. I'm pretty sure this is not normal. Are you still under 36,000?

This is what a tech at another dealership told me too. I went to get a second opinion. He said, "Unfortunately GM doesn't like them throwing parts at a car" so he was going to call GM to see what they recommend. Later that day the service adviser called me and said they would not work on the vehicle or call GM because a case was already started with GM at another dealership. On the 2002'* the TSB said to replace the steering gear. I might end up just buying one if GM won't take care of it. I'm not giving up without a fight though. :P

Any progress Donky? I talked with my local Pontiac Serice Manager yesterday who says that if I correct the issue myself, he is 95% sure that he can get GM to refund the costs. Has anyone else ever had a successful experience getting a refund from GM? Not sure if I want to take the chance, another non-GM mechanic told me he would recommend another steering gear since it corrected the issue before. GM says do not replace the steering gear because the noise will return after the break in period. Since it is not a safety issue, apparently GM is not concerned.

I am taking it in Saturday morning. I have been really busy at work and just haven't had the time. I will keep you posted on the results though.

I got the new shaft in today. So far so good but I hardly drove it. I will keep you all posted as the week goes on to see if I still get the same noise.

That'* what mine does now. It is very hard to duplicate it like I was able to in those videos. It just does it slightly every now and then like your describing with yours.

yep, I forget the mileage (I think 19K) when mine was done. It was probably 2K miles later when I started to notice it again. Now I am starting to here another noise in the steering. It'* very faint but noticeable to me. While driving and steering to the left I here a HMMMM type noise. This is not real noticeable but I can here it. This is only heard on curves where you are steering left and seems to be more noticeable around 45 mph.

I went and had a road force balance done on my wheels to see if it would help the shimmying problem. The owner'* wife was there working in the office and overheard me talking the the service guy. She came out to say she has a 2000 SSEi and had a steering issue on hers too. She also said she had a shimmying problem as well. She said the steering locked up on hers but she was able to have that issue resolved but the shimmy problems with it has never been fixed. Hers shakes at 35 mph. She said she has no issue'* with it driving on the hwy. Of course this wasn't a GM dealer, it was a small garage near me. I wanted a second opinion on my shimmy issue.

I have the exact same thing happening with my car. I just took it in last week and of course the dealership couldnt get it to do the same thing. It happens fairly infrequently. I am glad I have the extended warranty. But by the looks of it they may not fix it anyways. What a joke. The noise is far from "normal"
