The OD thing isn't on topic, but here goes. "OD" implies a gear with a ratio less than one. 4th gear on most cars is below one. Meaning the tranny output shaft spins just a little faster than the input shaft.

NERV: Replacing the bulb that lights those dots to the left of the shifter is easy.

You need to remove the shift **** first off. It'* easy, and comes off in one piece. On the back of it, facing the radio, there is a small slit that is about a 1/2 inch horizontal. If you can get a small pliers in there, grab and pull out the "U" shaped "pin" that keeps the handle on. The shift lever/handle then pulls off in one piece. It might take a little force, so put the car into Neutral, so that the shift lever is straight up and down so you don't accidentally hit the radio or something.

Next, remove the cigarette ash tray deal that sits in front of the shifter. There are two hex screws under that. Remove them. Then, it again helps to have the car in neutral -- pull up on the center piece, which includes the boot that goes on the shifting shaft. The whole deal will pivot at the armrest and slide over the shifting shaft.

Then, the bulb that lights those gear indicating red dots is screwed down (to the left and towards the front, about 6" directly under the PRND321 indicator panel). You can't miss it, there'* wires going to two bulbs there. Remove the piece, remove the bulb, and replace it.

It'* easier than it sounds.

This is also a touch off topic. The TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) in the tranny isn't really a physical gear, and doesn't provide a standard, physical gear ratio -- it is merely a special clutch. Therefore, our cars have 1, 2, 3, and 4th gear (which happens to be a ratio called overdrive, as jwikoff99 explains just above).

The fluid-driven TCC locks up because that increases our efficiency, which is theoretically about 10% worse when it isn't locked up (this is why a manual tranny gets better mileage -- because it either locks or it doesn't-- unless you're riding the clutch, hahaha). When it locks, the TCC is transformed from a fluid motion coupler into a physical motion coupler.

The TCC is coupled directly to the engine (before the other gears in the transmission), and acts as a regular clutch would in a standard tranny. (Except that it also multiplies the torque when the tranny isn't spinning as fast as the engine, or accelerating, with its fluid and stator operation). The engine can't accelerate forever, and so there'* a point when the TCC almost catches up to the engine'* revolutions. At such engine revolutions, a 10% deduction still means the TCC output is revolving pretty fast, and after a ratio applied by the gear you are in (1, 2, 3, or 4) it really doesn't matter if the TCC is locked or not (since it only locks at RPM'* that produce nearly a 1:1 ratio; compared to a ratio well over 1.5:1 when the TCC produces the most torque).

When our PCM locks the TCC (in 3rd or 4th), it doens't create any new ratio or something. Our cars have 4 gears, and that'* it, no monkey business.

well i finally got around to checking this out, turns out my bulb wasnt burned, out the wire was cut, and look intenitional since there was extra electrical tape put over the severed lead, i stripped them and reconnected them and now it works, question tho, how did you remove the red fileters? there seems to be debris inside mine that interferes with the lighting a little bit

I just used a utility knife to gently scrape out the filter, which is the red paint applied to the bottom of the main PRN4321 "lense" deal.

If it looks like you have debris in those little red dots, don't feel bad. If the debris looks exactly the same in each dot lit, then your bulb may be pointing funny into the fiber optic reciever. Undo the screw holding the bulb facing down, and re-seat it so it looks better.

However, if the "debris" looks different for each red dot that lights up, this is because the system is driven via fibre optics. At each end of the 4" jumper for each red dot, there is a metal crimp. Chances are the crimp isn't perfectly clean, and the light picks up funny, since the jumpers are made of 30-40 smaller fibres. The other reason could be that the insulation around those little fibres isn't perfectly circular. Anyhow, you're just sorta screwed.

On a side note, when I initially looked at my bulb that I thought was burned out, there was what looked like a new wiring harness jumper deal, with some huge resistor? taped into it. It looked like it was jury rigged to begin with, so I took pleasure in totally replacing the setup to LED'*.
