Default Weak antenna

Until recently I was listening to CD'* exclusively since I bought my car with a broken antenna mast. I finally got a decent deal on a replacement, hooked it up, and now have some radio...very weak, static filled radio... I've gone back, checked the ground at the antenna, checked connections at the antenna and the back of the radio, still the same. Any ideas short of pulling the antenna cable out and checking it?

Is the antenna extending when the radio is on?

OEM deck or aftermarket?
If it'* aftermarket maybe they didn't hook up the antenna signal cable.

It'* possible to hook up the "power" lead to make it extend but not the actual signal cable.

It'* an OEM radio, don't know 100% if it'* the original or not, but it is GM.
