Default Swap stock cassette for stock CD?

Possibly an old, worn out question here... but please bear with me. Unfortunately my recently-purchased '98 SLE came with the stock cassette head unit installed. Of course I want to change this over to a CD player, and I'd like to keep a stock unit so I don't lose the steering wheel controls. I'm also trying to keep costs low here... my competition-grade stereo is in my other car, and the days are long gone when I can drop high dollars on stereo equipment!

Can my stock cassette deck simply be swapped for a stock CD deck from another '98 (or other years)? Someone wrote in another thread that the same stereos were used in all 1992 - 1999 Bonnies. Can someone verify that? TechInfo had a topic on converting 92-93 cassette decks to CD decks from 94-95 models... but I couldn't find anything on later models. TIA -

No, a 92-93 player won't work without modifications. You can use a CD player from the 94-99 Bonneville, or from another Pontiac if it looks just like the 94-99 Bonneville CD player, including some Pontiac models up to 2001.

EBay is good, just make sure Theftlock is disabled or the owner gives you the code.

There are dealer procedures to get around the theftlock, and someone in the administration may be able to help you with that.

we have the procedure but the dealer code we have is invalid and without the dealer code to access the phone network, the procedure is useless

We have one that works, but we don't keep it on for theft/liability reasons is what I remember.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm make sure I don't buy a "locked" player... several auctions I've already seen mention how easy it is to unlock them, but I'd rather play it safe.
