According to your theory then both should sound the same since they will both be +3db

Side note: Some extreme setups for SPL comps, because ports can't flow enough...
Like Ibanez said, porting is A LOT about tuning. Any setup can sound good (even bandpass, hell i've got to listen to bandpass till spring break) but you just have to do your setup properly. Sealed will generally have the flattest response.
What your subs specs are, what you listen to, your knowledge, and your trunk requirements are big determinents as to what you can/should run.
