Default Replacement Radio/CD player

Hello,

I have a '97 SSEI. The CD player stopped working with the dreaded E20 error code recently. I took it apart and cleaned the lens but it didn't help.

After checking into local repair shops and junkyards it appears the best bet to replace my radio is Ebay. Yes, I know an aftermarket radio would be nicer but I'm trying to fix this as cheap as possible (and keep the steering wheel controls).

My question for the users of this forum is related to the radio itself. The radio I have is the standard Delco one with a single slider control for both Bass and Treble. This radio is harder to find on Ebay. A more plentiful one is the one with the 7-band EQ. Is there a difference between these two other than the tone controls? If I remember correctly the 7 band version wasn't an option for the SSEI when I bought the car. Is there a technical reason why the 7-band version won't work in my car?

Hopefully this is a simple question. Of course I thought the Pontiac dealer would know the answer too, but they were totally clueless and useless.

Thanks for any information you can provide me.

Garth

7-band WILL work in your car. I have one inmy 1999. Helps the sound tremendously. They say not to use it with the BOSE systems because the amp is supposed to adjust the lows/mids/highs to the song while you have little control with the BASS and TREBLE sliders.
Once I put the 7-band in I couldn't believe the difference in sound. I had a Pioneer deck in but it sounded like chit (DEH-P47DH).
P.*. What'* going to happen with the non-working deck? I am looking for one to monkey around with and put in my Dads 1956 Olds.

Thanks for the quick post. I figured it had something to do with that mystery "dynamic equalization" label in my car.

The old deck was going to be put in a box or the trash or something. The radio works good, the only other problem is that the volume **** seems to have a mind of it'* own. Turning it down usually makes it louder before it gets quieter. But since I rely on the steering wheel control most of the time that part doesn't bother me too much. It might be an easy fix for somebody who wants to mess around with it.

I'm not sure where Sauk Centre is, but I'm in Rochester, MN. so shipping wouldn't be that far.
Let me know if you'd like the old deck when I replace it. We can probably work something out.

Thanks again,
Garth.
