So you think that the gain amp uses a speaker level input from the headunit? If this is true, it should be easy to tap into it. We would need to have all of the components together on a table to find out for sure how it works. Aren't there any engineers at GM who can explain this audio system so we don't have to guess?

When the "technicians" at futureshop hooked up your system, you are lucky that they didnt blow everything. From this picture (thanks Poke) It looks like the gain amp is wired up with an 8 volt preout from the deck and a remote turn on wire. When they installed your deck they probably got confused and ran new wires. If your deck seemes to work properly then it should be safe to use the wires they put in.
