Check out ebay, the aps-996'* usually go for about $135. When i was picking my remote start, it ended up being a tossup between this model and the directed 554 model. currently it is a valet 554r, previously it was a hornet 554t. All three are relatively the exact same system.
The reason for me choosing the directed model was because it had more modual options built specifically for it, and after reading both manuals the directed model seemed like it had better documentation. The difference was the directed model was $30 more. I also didnt think at the time that the aps-996 had temp check but according to the original post it does.
I ended up spending about $200 on the whole install with extra wire, solder, electrical tape, relays, prewired relay ends, inline fuses, etc.
My only regret at this time is the range. I wanted something that would reach to my classroom on campus, but neither of these two systems will have that range. My next option is to spend $70 on a module that will do a timed remote start of the system. So in the end im looking at $230 for the system before the added parts. If i had just bought a compustar for ~$250, which has a range of about 1 to 1.5 miles i would have had everything i wanted.
Granted, range is relative to the install, but the compustar has a much further 1 to 1.5 miles suggested range than either the aps at 1400' or the directed at 1000'. In the end i would have been better off just spending the extra money.
Im not nocking one system or the other. It all depends on what you want and are comfortable with. Just pointing out some options to think about.
