Default double DIN??

I want to put an indash dvd in my car but I cant spend the money for a nice pioneer or alpine unit. If I bought a dvd reciever and a seperate in dash lcd screen, could I modify my dash to accept a double DIN system? That way I could buy a screen and reciever cheaper. Has this been done before?

Jimmyfloyd and I talked about installing a single DIN AM/FM/DVD headunit and a 7" screen below. The headinut would have to be mounted as high as it could go in the 1.5 DIN opening so the LCD can fit as a surface mount. This would be much cheaper than a motorized in-dash 7" screen.

A double DIN unit recently fell in my lap and I've successfully mounted it in a modified dash with a modified trim panel (see here for pics). The trim is in the final stages of completion but I'm still waiting on some spray texture. As we speak I'm working on the HUD switch opening.
