Considering you don't turn it up very loud to begin with, I doubt it.

IMO you could get away with a LOT of different subs that you can put in small boxes, like the Image Dynamics IDQ10" that I'm getting two of, if you're never cranking them up and if you don't care for the SPL.

For a SQ system, no. SPL yea.

Considering he just mentioned how he barely ever cranks it up and he doens't seem to be concerned with how much output is affected by using a smaller box not in the ideal range for that sub, I'd say SPL is not his top priority. A IDQ10V3 is still decently loud.

Got it.

At this point I'd much rather recommend an IDQ10V3 or even an ID10V3 over a JL flat mount sub.

I agree... I wont buy "name brand" again. I think ill stick with Fi, RE, DD, ID, ect

so can someone explain in simple english words whats SPL and SQ?

raptor660 12-06-2010 09:07 PM

SPL (Sound Pressure Level)- Referring to a system designed for max db's, or audio equipment that handle alot of power, and move alot of air. LOUD
SQ (sound quality)- referring to a system tuned for high quality audio reproduction. Or audio equipment designed to sound good, not necessarily loudness.

Couldn't have said it better. Some subs are designed for SPL, to be loud, raunchy, and at times quite loose. Great for rap/hip hop, not great for music that requires a lot of control like rock, country, classical, techno, etc. SQ subs are generally not going to be massively loud. They will be able to handle power and they will get loud enough to shake your car, but they will be designed to be very refined, tight, controlled, accurate, and responsive.

You play a very fast repetitive beat on a pure SPL sub like my 15" Hifonics and it will turn into more of a drone or a rumble than anything. You play the same beat on an SQ sub like the IDQ's I bought off a guy earlier, and you'll hear every single individual beat.

Don't get the impression that SQ subs are quiet, they're not. They can still get very loud, just not stupidly loud to where it drowns out everything else.
