Audio (and aftermarket electronics) This is your place for alarms, remote starters, to brag about your system, exaggerate your db levels, or simply ask questions for stock or aftermarket audio. No Flames! (except from roasted amps)

Default Computer in the Car

I have been throwing this idea around for quite a while. But I think it very feasable to put a computer into your car. I have the parts to do it. It would be one of the mini-ITX design. The case is very small, and the power supply is DC-operable. The only thing needed would be a nice keyboard and mouse combo, as well as a small screen of some sort. All of this costs under $500 BTW.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Id use a wireless combo, radio if you can, over infrared (Line of sight). Mount it in the trunk get a card with DVI and run an LCD. If you dont want the big LCD you could get a small 8 line display and hook it to the serial port if you just want readouts like mp3 stats and stuff. There is quite a bit of info on this out on the net, try a google...

What about a laptop or notebook? It'* all there in front of you and a touchpad on it. These days a laptop has the same functionality as a computer.

I already know how to do this guys, I do not need info. Also wireless is fine but the keyboards/mice are too big for a car. I was wondering if anyone has done this sort of setup, or if anyone is interested in it.

I too have the know-how, the capability, and an endless supply of parts at my disposal to this same thing....the only reason I have'nt done it, is I can't think of a reason "why". My headunit plays MP3s, WMA'*, etc. Im too busying driving to watch a DVD, and writing code while driving is right out..sure it would be cool, but if you want cool get a head unit that has a built in LCD screen, navagational capabilities, maybe AUX input so if you wanted to you could run your Playstation, Xbox, or whatever...

If you want to do it then do it! When you post on a forum don't expect people to not share their two cents though.

An associate of mine had a computer in his car, 10" LCD screen, 20 GB drive, the ATX board and powersupply...he had a pointing device that actually fit on your pointing finger with a little track ball of sorts; that way he could move the cursor around his thumb. He did drive some little acura ricer thing though...

No, no guys, I was asking for suggestions, just commenting on what I already know. I take no offense. But I do not think there is a hook-up from computer to pcm for our cars? i might be wrong.

If you have a 96 or later, (OBDII) you can get a scantool that is PC based (check ebay for PC scantool) that will give you aLL sorts of info, but no programming...That'* coming with the hypertech power programme (silver silverbullets post)
