Default "Check CD"

My CD player works great sometimes, and other times it stops working and the display on the stereo says: "Check CD".
Is this thing fried, or is there something I can do to fix it?
If it'* fried, I'm looking for the stereo for a 2001 SSEi.
If someone has recently upgraded to an aftermarket item, I'd love to see if I could talk you out of your original equipment item.
Mine is the BOSE 8 speaker system, if it makes a difference.
Also, I need some tips on removing the trim so that I can get to and remove the stereo. I can handle the clips all around everything, but over the gauges there are a couple of plastic "punch rivets". How do you remove those? I think they work sort of like wall anchors where you insert them then tap the center pin and they lock in place.

Thanks for your help,

Can I assume this occurs on multiple different CD'*? Could possibly be a dirty lens, also a few other problems that may be a little more difficult to repair.

As for a replacement, the head unit makes no real difference. These were the same whether you have Bose, Monsoon or no amp at all. You should have the AM/FM/CD/Cassette. In 2004 they changed to black buttons from gray. In 2003 the AM/FM button changed to BAND. This only means the head unit will support the XM receiver (if installed). You won't have this receiver, but the head unit will otherwise work fine. You just won't see XM1 or XM2 as you cycle through band choices. Any BONNEVILLE head unit from 2000-2005 should be fine.

If you find one on eBay, be careful! Many people advertise radios that will fit the Bonneville and other vehicles (Montana, etc). The connector on the Bonneville is very unique. You must find a Bonneville radio. It has one connector for the antenna and one wide white connector for the radio. Other radios that have the same looking face have one antenna connector and two black connectors for the radio.

Are you still looking for a head unit? I know someone who has one. He'll probably be willing to part within the next week to ten days. Not sure how much he wants for it. These radios have a bit of a history for light bulbs burning out but I know his just had all the bulbs replaced. I understand it'* in very good condition. It is an AM/FM/CD/Cassette and will fit your car. It would need to be unlocked by the dealership (as would any used OEM radio you install). Let me know if you're still looking.

Mine has gotten better - or worse - depending on your definition. It is now a sometimes CD player. Works great - sometimes.
I'm a little short on "play money", but I'd be interested to know what he wants for it.

Thanks Man,
