Default Another ? on CD player display screen

I got the factory CD player from a JY, and the display never worked. I changed the light bulb from a working display, but that didn't help.

I noticed the other day when I was driving that I could see the display! BUT the sun was shining on the radio. I noticed that everything worked, I set the time, skipped tracks on the CD player. Everything worked, but I could only see it with the sun on it.

Is there something else that would cause it to be dim and could be fixed? I'm just curious if anyone knows. I'll be replacing it with an aftermarket HU eventually anyway, so it'* no big deal.

The funny thing is, it came from a 97. I drove in my friend'* 99 with the same exact HU Monday, and her display did not work either.
