Default alarm question

Hello all,
my friend is giving me a 92 Bonneville, he'* having trouble with the alarm. Sometimes the car will start normally when the alarm disengages, but most times the car won't turn on. He states that he has an automated start system, dont know if it'* factory or aftermarket. Can anyone shed some light on how I can fix this problem.

Thanks

A picture of the remote, if any, will help determine if is factory or aftermarket. Can you post one? Does the vehicle have VATS?

If it'* a remote _starter_, it'* an aftermarket box, as GM doesn't have that option (yet; it'* coming soon).

If the car won't crank the starter (i.e. it won't even _attempt_ to start the engine), its VATS box (the factory anti-theft system) may be blocking the process. If there'* a Security light blazing away on the dash when you try the remote starter, wait for it to time out (about 3 minutes) and then try again using your key. If that'* successful, then the bypass box for the remote starter is either flaky or misconfigured.

If we're talking about an alarm system here, we'll need a little more detail from you. The upscale Bonnevilles (SSE/SSEi) have one from the factory; it may have been an option on the LE/SE series as well.

Thanks alot guys for all the info. Im thinking of just disabling the alarm for now until I have time to further check it. we got the car started but sometimes the alarm just has a mind of its own and kicks in automatically, disabling the entire car.

That'* not a factory alarm, then (especially if you can find a black box to disable...). The factory security system isn't a box hanging under the dash that you can easily just snip wires to.

Just to clarify: are you battling with an aftermarket _alarm_ here, or an aftermarket _starter_? And does the remote transmitter have any brand name on it? How about the box in the car that you say you're going to disable?

Thanks all for your help, the alarm has been disabled, and it was an aftermarket alarm.

If it is an aftermarket alarm and was professionally installed it might have a starter diasable relay (to prevent the car from cranking) between the ignition switch starter wire and the starter. If so remove relay and connect the starter wires
