It just means how many drivers are in the speaker. This is a 3-way:

Three-way, or triaxial, speakers take the separate woofer and tweeter from a two-way design and add a midrange driver for enhanced warmth and texture. Select three-ways use a supertweeter, instead of a midrange, for extended high frequency response. Four-ways combine a woofer, a midrange, a tweeter, and a supertweeter for even more detail.
IMO, 3 is enough, anything over that is overkill.

Kicker is a good brand, but there are better.

Yea I realize there is better out there the only reason Im going with kicker is cause I found a set for my front and a set for the rear deck of my car for $110 total. Do they carry good bass that doesnt extremely distort when you turn it up?

Kicker is alright, their lineup has gone downhill a bit within the last couple of years but still a respectable upgrade. Upgrading the speakers with the stock deck may not sound that much better unless you had blown speakers or something. The stock deck is not the cleanest amp so it will probably distort if the EQ is at extremes and volume cranked up. The thing about 2/3/4/5 way speakers, is that even if it has more speakers, do not let that into fooling you that it is gonna sound better, I have heard some 4/5 way speakers that sound way too tinny and it actually takes away from the speaker, realistically i would go 3 way at the very most, (I recommend only 2 and 3 way) but go to your local store and listen for yourself

And no the stock speakers werent blown, it just had absolutely no bass what-so-ever. The sound was really good, specially for older stock speakers, but with no bass it drove me nuts and since I dont have a high paying job and I get very few hours per paycheck I have to buy things 1 at a time. Next is the front speakers followed by the install kit for my cd deck.

seems like most of the high end speakers are only 2-way... 2 is ok, 4 or 5 is just overkill like Haro said.

So in your opinion, 3-way speakers are best?
